How to Check Whether ChatGPT Recommends Your Business
To check whether ChatGPT recommends you, ask it the questions your customers ask (without your business name), note whether you're mentioned and in what position, and repeat every few weeks. At the same time, make sure your site is open to AI bots and clearly says who you are.
Why does this matter now?
More and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude "who's the best at…" instead of searching Google. The answer usually names only a few businesses, and anyone not mentioned simply isn't in the conversation.
How do you check yourself, step by step?
- Write 5–10 questions the way a customer would, without your business name. For example: "Who installs air conditioners well in Austin?"
- Ask each question in a new chat so the answer isn't influenced by the previous one.
- Note: were you mentioned, in what position, and who was mentioned instead.
- Check Claude and Gemini too, since each engine answers differently.
- Repeat monthly, because answers change.
Why does AI recommend one business and not another?
| What the AI needs | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Access to your site | Bots (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) aren't blocked in robots.txt or your firewall |
| To understand who you are | A clear name, field, location and contact details, plus Organization or LocalBusiness schema |
| Quotable content | Short, clear answers, data, Q&A |
| Mentions across the web | Other sites, directories and articles that mention your business |
What do you do if they don't recommend you?
- Check that your site is open to bots, for example with the free AI readiness checker.
- Add a real About page, contact details and schema.
- Write content that answers exactly the questions where you weren't mentioned.
- Earn mentions on sites the AI already cites in your field.
How do you do this without checking by hand?
AutoWriter's AI & ChatGPT visibility tool asks ChatGPT and Claude your customers' questions, shows where you were mentioned and who was mentioned instead, and suggests articles to close the gap. The first check is free.
What we found when we checked our own sites
We checked two of our sites with the AI readiness checker. olympusfit.co.il scored 94 out of 100: bot access, technical health, identity and freshness all scored 100%, and only "quotable content" scored 78%, because the home page lacked an H1 heading and numeric data. autowriter.biz scored 84 out of 100: identity scored only 50%, because Organization schema and social profile links were missing.
The takeaway: even a site that looks good to visitors can be unclear to AI engines. The fix is usually simple: schema, an About page and contact details.
Checklist: 7 things to check on your site
- robots.txt doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot or PerplexityBot.
- Your firewall or Cloudflare doesn't block AI bots.
- The main text is in the HTML, not loaded only by JavaScript.
- There's an About page and full contact details.
- There's Organization or LocalBusiness schema.
- There are Q&As that answer what customers ask.
- New content is published at least once a month.
How many questions should you check?
For a small business, 10–20 questions covering your main services are enough. Ask like a customer, e.g. "how much does…" or "who's the best at…", not your business name, because the point is whether you're recommended when they don't know you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend me?
No. Recommendations in answers aren't ads; they're based on the information the engine finds and understands.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time?
Answers vary with the wording, the web search it runs and model updates. That's why you should check several questions over time.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?
GPTBot is used for training. The bot that decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot, and that's the one not to block.
How soon will I see a change?
Usually a few weeks to a few months, depending on your field and how much content and how many mentions you add.
