What Is Schema Markup and How to Add It to Your Site

Schema markup is code that tells Google and AI engines what's on a page: who the business is, the price, the frequently asked questions. You add it as JSON-LD inside the page, usually with an SEO plugin or a generator, and test it with Google's tool.

What does schema actually do?

Google reads the text on a page but isn't always sure what it describes. Schema tells it explicitly: "this is a local business in Austin, this is the phone, these are the opening hours". That information can appear as a rich result (rating, price, questions), and it helps AI engines understand who you are.

Which schema types matter most for businesses?

TypeWhen to use it
LocalBusinessA business with an address or service area
OrganizationA company or brand, mainly on the home page
ArticleArticles and blog posts
FAQPageA page with questions and answers
ProductProduct pages in a store

How do you add schema to your site?

  1. Create the code: in an SEO plugin like Yoast or Rank Math, or with our free schema generator.
  2. Paste it into the page, inside a script tag of type application/ld+json (plugins do this for you).
  3. Test it with Google's Rich Results Test.
  4. Monitor the Enhancements section in Search Console after a few days.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

  • Adding information that isn't on the page, such as ratings or reviews you don't show.
  • Two conflicting schemas for the same business (from a plugin and from manual code).
  • An address or phone different from your site and Google Business Profile.

Does schema improve rankings?

Google doesn't describe schema as a direct ranking factor. But it can earn a richer, more noticeable result that raises click-through, and it helps AI engines identify your business. AutoWriter's checkers flag a missing schema on your home page.

What we found when we checked our own site

When we checked autowriter.biz with the AI readiness checker, the only issue found was missing Organization schema. Because of it, the "identity" score dropped to 50% and the total to 84 out of 100. The other site we checked, olympusfit.co.il, with full schema, scored 100% on identity and 94 overall.

An example of local business schema

{  "@context": "https://schema.org",  "@type": "LocalBusiness",  "name": "Business name",  "url": "https://example.com",  "telephone": "+1-555-000-0000",  "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "addressLocality": "Austin", "addressCountry": "US" },  "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 09:00-18:00"}

That's the minimum: name, site URL, phone, city and hours. You can add a logo, a description and social profiles (sameAs).

A 5-step schema checklist

  1. Home page: Organization or LocalBusiness.
  2. Every article: Article, with published and modified dates.
  3. Pages with questions: FAQPage.
  4. Product pages: Product, with price and availability.
  5. Test with the Rich Results Test after every change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to code to add schema?

No. SEO plugins do most of the work, and with a generator you fill in a form and copy the code.

How many schema types can one page have?

As many as needed, as long as they describe things really on the page, e.g. Article and FAQPage on the same article.

Why doesn't my rich result appear on Google?

Google decides whether to show it. Valid schema makes it possible, not guaranteed.

Does schema help AI engines?

It helps them understand explicitly who the business is, what it does and where, which is part of the identity they check.
